Why Sod, Mulch, and Gravel Quantities Are Often Wrong in Landscaping Estimates

Construction Estimation

No two landscapes will ever require exactly the same amount of material; however, sod, mulch, gravel, and even soil estimates rarely match the project's actual needs. When you are creating bid estimates or managing job costs, even the slightest miscalculation can lead to material shortages, budget deficits, and costly delays.

One of the biggest reasons sod, mulch, and gravel quantities are inaccurate is that site conditions rarely match design plans perfectly. Slopes, irregular property boundaries, grading changes, and existing site features can significantly impact the amount of Landscaping Material required. What looks straightforward on a plan often becomes much more complicated in the field.

For sod, waste produced from trimming, shaping curves, and laying overlap can increase the amount of material needed. For mulch, a minor error in the specified depth can lead to significant deviations in the volume. And for gravel, estimates are influenced by the degree of compaction, subgrade conditions, and the layer depth; thus, exact figures are needed.

Another problem is the use of manual calculations when performing landscaping takeoff. In the traditional method, some information about the site might be overlooked; therefore, estimates may be inaccurate. Using up-to-date landscaping estimating software will assist contractors in taking more accurate measurements for areas, automatically calculating volumes, and avoiding costly estimation errors.

An estimate requires contractors to understand how to remove the sod, mulch, and gravel, and to take off quantities, which may require accounting for the waste factor, settling, compaction, and even the actual site installation for a correct estimate, and to avoid change orders later due to estimation errors. The National Association of Landscape Professionals also agrees that good planning and material handling are required for increasing the efficiency and profitability of landscaping jobs.

The long story short is that when sod, mulch, or gravel quantities are off, it is usually because real-world conditions are much more difficult than the drawings depict. Knowing how to do a proper landscaping takeoff and using an accurate landscaping estimating procedure can minimize or even eliminate the need to reorder landscaping materials later.
