What is Top Plate?

The topmost horizontal part of the wall frame, which connects vertical studs and on which rafters or upper floor joists will be fastened, is called a top plate or, more specifically, a double top plate because most wall framing incorporates at least two parallel top plates.

In residential and commercial buildings, top plates are typically made of wood in light-frame construction, although steel top plates are also used in metal framing systems. Many load-bearing walls use a double top plate for added strength and improved load distribution.

Purpose

The top plate connects the wall studs to create a single structural element and serves as the bearing for the roof rafters or floor joists.
