What is Stucco?

Stucco is a durable wall finish made from cement, sand, lime, and water, commonly used on exterior walls to create a textured and weather-resistant surface.

Definition

Stucco is a low-cost plaster material that can be applied to both walls and ceilings in several layers to create a durable, protective finish. Generally, that layered finish is created with stucco on the exterior of homes and buildings; however, there are instances where stucco is applied on the interior to enhance the decoration. The standard mix for traditional stucco consists of cement, sand, lime, and water, creating an extremely durable finish once the mixture dries.

Purpose

Stucco is used for decoration on surfaces in buildings as well, which gives protection from rain, sunlight, and fluctuations of weather conditions, making it suitable for all types of climates. Stucco is durable and long-lasting; however, stucco also gives an aesthetically clean, textured finish that can match multiple architectural styles & colors.

Examples of Use

  • Residential Homes: Applied to exterior walls for a long-lasting and attractive finish.
  • Commercial Buildings: Used to protect exterior walls, improve the overall appearance of a building, and can also be applied to the interiors of retail stores and apartment buildings.
  • Interior Finishes: Added to the interiors of walls and/or ceilings for the purpose of creating decorative surfaces.
  • Renovation Projects: Used to upgrade or repair the exterior wall surfaces on older homes.

Notes

  • Stucco is known for its durability when maintained properly.
  • It can give both a smooth or textured finish, depending on the design preference.
  • Installation is necessary to prevent cracks and water problems.
  • Stucco is commonly used in both modern and traditional architectural styles.
