What is Plumbing Reducers?

Plumbing reducers are fittings that connect pipes of different sizes, creating a smoother transition between smaller and larger pipes.

Definition

When it is required that a piping system change diameter but the flow path must not be interrupted, a plumbing reducer is used. They are available in different shapes and connection types, including threaded, soldered, and press-fit versions, depending on the piping material and installation method.

A reducer can be concentric, with both pipe openings sharing the same centerline, or eccentric, where the openings are offset. The right type depends on the layout and the plumbing system's needs.

Purpose

Plumbing reducers create a reliable connection between pipes with different diameters. This makes it easier to connect different sections of a water supply, drainage, or other piping system without using an improvised connection.

Examples of Use

  • A plumber may use a reducer to connect a 1-inch water supply pipe to a ¾-inch branch line serving a sink.
  • In a larger system, reducers can also be used where pipe sizes change between different sections of the distribution network.

Notes

  • Available in concentric and eccentric designs.
  • Can be made for threaded, soldered, press-fit, and other connection methods.
  • Helps create a clean transition between different pipe sizes.
  • A plumbing reducer is different from a plumbing pressure reducer. A pipe reducer changes pipe diameter, while a plumbing pressure reducing valve changes water pressure.
