What is Plumbing Couplings?
Plumbing couplings are fittings that join two pipes or pipe sections in order to create a secure connection without replacing the entire pipe run.
Definition
Purpose
A plumbing coupling is used to join pipes together in a more easy and convenient manner. A plumber can use the coupling to link two pipes together, or install a new pipe, rather than replacing a long stretch of pipe.
Couplings can also be useful during repairs, extensions, and installations where pipes need to be joined securely while maintaining a continuous flow through the system.
Examples of Use
- A plumber finds a damaged section of copper pipe and cuts it out. They install a new piece of copper pipe between the remaining sections using copper coupling to connect the new piece to the existing plumbing.
- A rubber plumbing coupler can be used by a contractor to connect two sections of pipe for repairs where some flexibility is required in the connection and minor movement or alignment differences may occur.

Notes
- Couplings are commonly used to connect pipes, but not to alter their direction or size.
- The coupling material and connection should match the style of the pipes which are being connected.
- Some couplings are permanent, while others can be removed for maintenance or repairs.
- Proper sizing and a secure connection help prevent leaks and maintain reliable water flow.
