What is Plumbing Fixtures?

Plumbing fixtures are installed devices that supply, control, or drain water for everyday activities such as washing, bathing, sanitation, etc.

Definition

Plumbing fixtures are the visible, usable parts of a plumbing system that people use and see on a daily basis. These consist of sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, faucets, water closets, and urinals.

Fixtures are located where water is used or wastewater is collected, unlike pipes and fittings which are located behind walls. They vary in style, size, and configuration depending on the building and the intended use.

Purpose

A plumbing fixture is designed to allow the water supply and the movement of used water to be practically and easily connected. They enable people to carry out their daily activities: hand washing, bathing, toilet use, and cleaning.

They also facilitate the direction of used water to drainage systems and assist proper sanitation and water management.

Examples of Use

  • Residential bathrooms: Sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, and faucets are used for personal hygiene and sanitation.
  • Commercial restrooms: Water closets, urinals, lavatories, and hand-washing fixtures are normally installed to serve larger numbers of occupants.
  • Kitchens: Sinks and faucets provide water for food preparation, dishwashing, and general cleaning.
  • Public and institutional buildings: Schools, hospitals, offices, and other facilities utilize various plumbing fixtures depending on the number of people in the building and its usage requirements.
  • Industrial and utility areas: Specialized sinks, wash stations, and other fixtures can aid in cleaning and maintenance operations.

Notes

  • Plumbing fixtures differ from plumbing pipes and fittings whose primary function is to transport water and wastewater.
  • Fixture selection depends on factors like location, water usage, available space, durability, and installation requirements.
  • Fixtures are typically connected to both the building's water supply and drainage systems.
  • Water closets and urinals are common plumbing fixtures specifically designed for sanitary waste disposal.
  • Fixture specifications can vary significantly between residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.
