What is Handhole?

A handhole is a small access opening built into underground systems to allow inspection, maintenance, and routing of electrical conductors or irrigation lines.

Definition

A handhole is essentially a small access box for underground utilities. It gives crews a way to get to cables, pipes, or valves without having to dig up the area. Usually made from precast concrete or polymer, handholes are used for pulling or splicing conductors and keeping irrigation valves accessible. The cover is usually flush with the ground, and the load rating depends on whether the handhole is in a pedestrian area or in a location where vehicles will pass over it.

Purpose

Running conduit or irrigation pipe without handholes is a short-term decision that catches up with you fast. A long conduit or irrigation run is difficult to access when repairs are needed, or a conductor has to be pulled. Handholes provide those access points, helping reduce pulling tension and giving crews a spot to work without digging up the line.

Examples of Use

  • Electrical Systems: Installed along conduit runs to give crews access for pulling, redirecting, or splicing conductors without digging up the ground.
  • Landscape Irrigation: Sit over valve clusters and pipe joints to allow crews to access them easily, especially for seasonal adjustments or repairs.
  • Telecommunications: Used to manage cable slack, make connections, and access underground lines along communication routes.
  • Drainage: Provide access for clearing blockages and checking pipes without having to excavate the entire line.

Notes

  • Lid ratings matter. A handhole in a parking lot needs a cover rated for vehicle loads; one tucked into a planting bed does not.
  • Spacing them correctly along a conduit run keeps pulling tension manageable and protects the electrical conductors from damage during installation.
  • The interior has to be large enough to accommodate the minimum bend radius of the cables or pipes passing through.
