What is Lightning Protection System?

A lightning protection system gives lightning current a planned route from the point of attachment on a structure down to ground.

Definition

A lightning protection system is a safety network installed on a structure to intercept lightning and carry its electrical energy safely into the earth. It provides a controlled route for that energy from the structure to ground.

Purpose

A lightning strike can send a large current through a building in ways the structure was never intended to handle. Roofing, electrical equipment, electronics, and other building systems may be damaged along the path. Lightning protection gives that current a deliberate route through strike termination devices and conductors to ground, reducing the chance of it finding its own path through building components.

Examples of Use

  • Commercial Buildings: Systems may be installed across roofs and connected to grounding and building services to reduce lightning-related damage.
  • Industrial Facilities: Exposed structures and equipment can be provided with defined paths for carrying lightning current to ground.
  • Data and Communication Facilities: Structural lightning protection is often used alongside surge protection where sensitive electronic systems are present.
  • Tall or Exposed Structures: Dedicated protection may be specified based on the building's characteristics or the findings of a lightning risk assessment.

Notes

  • Lightning rods alone do not make up the full protection system. Conductors, grounding, bonding, and surge protection are also part of the installation.
  • NFPA 780 and UL 96A are commonly referenced for lightning protection system design and installation.
  • The arrangement is specific to the building. Air-terminal locations, conductor routing, bonding points, and grounding details vary from one project to another.
