What is Branch Wiring?
Branch wiring carries electrical power from the final overcurrent device to the outlets, lighting, and equipment connected to an electrical branch circuit.

Purpose
From the panelboard, branch wiring carries power out to specific areas and loads within the building. Using separate branch circuits makes it possible to match conductor sizing and protection to the equipment being served while also allowing individual circuits to be isolated for maintenance or repair. OSHA requirements also address where branch circuits originate, along with conductor protection and grounding.
Examples of Use
- Lighting Circuits: Carry power to luminaires, switches, and lighting controls serving rooms or work areas.
- Receptacle Circuits: Feed wall outlets used for portable tools, appliances, and other general-purpose loads.
- Dedicated Equipment: Supply equipment such as water heaters, HVAC units, and other loads assigned to an individual circuit.
- Temporary Construction Power: Provide power for temporary lighting, receptacles, and fixed equipment used while construction is underway.
