What are Roof Drains & Scupper?

Roof drains and scuppers are drainage components that remove rainwater from roofs & direct it into drainage systems or away from building exteriors.

Definition

Roof drains are fittings installed at low points on roofs to collect water and convey it through connected piping. Scuppers are openings through roof edges or parapet walls that allow water to drain from the roof, often into gutters or downspouts.

Purpose

Roof drains & scuppers help manage rainwater and protect roofing systems from water accumulation.

  • Water Removal: Directs rainwater off roof surfaces.
  • Ponding Prevention: Reduces standing water when properly designed & maintained.
  • Building Protection: Helps prevent water infiltration & moisture damage.
  • Drainage Management: Connects roof runoff to piping, gutters or discharge points.
  • Code Compliance: Supports required roof drainage provisions.
  • Material Estimation: Helps contractors calculate drain quantities, scupper openings and associated materials.

Examples of Use

  • Commercial Roofs: Roof drains collect water from large flat or low-slope roofs.
  • Industrial Buildings: Scuppers are openings in parapet walls for drainage.
  • Residential Buildings: Roof drains serve suitable flat-roof designs.
  • Parking Structures: Drainage components remove rainwater from exposed decks.
  • Multifamily Buildings: Primary & Secondary drainage systems control the roof runoff.

Notes

  • Roof drains are commonly connected to internal stormwater piping.
  • Scuppers may discharge into gutters, downspouts or designated exterior drainage areas.
  • Takeoffs use roof plans, plumbing drawings, drainage details and specifications.
  • Estimates may include drain bodies, strainers, flashing, piping, scuppers & overflow components.
  • Drain size, roof area, slope, and rainfall design requirements affect system selection.
  • Secondary or overflow drainage may be required by applicable codes and project specifications.
  • Proper waterproofing and flashing are essential around roof drain and scupper openings.
  • Accurate takeoffs help contractors estimate materials, labor and drainage installation costs.
