What is Plumbing Piping?

Plumbing piping is the network of pipes, fittings, and valves within a building that carry clean water in and out, remove wastewater, and manage drainage.

Definition

The plumbing system of a building is based around plumbing piping, and the piping may run through walls, floors, ceilings, utility areas, or underground areas depending on the project.

The system can include several types of piping, such as Domestic Water Piping for supplying potable water, Sanitary and Waste Piping for carrying wastewater, and Storm Drainage Piping for moving rainwater away from the building. Pipes may also require insulation to help control temperature, prevent condensation, and protect certain piping from freezing.

Purpose

Plumbing piping provides a reliable path for water to reach fixtures and equipment while safely directing wastewater and stormwater away. A well-designed piping system also ensures adequate water pressure, flow, drainage and sanitation.

The layout and construction materials will vary based on the type of the building, plumbing fixtures, local codes, and project needs. By planning it well, we can minimize leakages, blockages, pressure problems and maintenance later on.

Examples of Use

A contractor installs domestic water piping through the walls of a new apartment building to supply sinks, showers, toilets, and other fixtures. Sanitary and waste piping connects those fixtures to the building's drainage system, while storm drainage piping carries rainwater from roof drains toward the site's drainage system.

In areas where temperature control or condensation is a concern, the plumbing crew adds insulation around sections of the piping as specified by the project.

Notes

  • Plumbing piping can include both water-supply and drainage systems, not just pipes connected to fixtures.
  • Pipe material and size vary based on the fluid being carried, pressure, temperature, location, and project requirements.
  • Proper slope is especially important for gravity-driven sanitary and storm drainage piping.
  • Insulation may be required to reduce heat loss, prevent condensation, or provide freeze protection.
  • Pipe routing should be coordinated with structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems to avoid conflicts during installation.
