What is Mechanical Piping?

Mechanical piping is a system of pipes, fittings, and valves used to transport fluids, gases, refrigerants and utilities in buildings and industrial facilities.

Definition

Mechanical piping is a piping system to transfer liquids and gasses between equipment, systems and service areas. In construction this can often include CHW/HW piping, refrigerant piping, gas and utility piping for heating, cooling, ventilation and other building services.

Purpose

Mechanical piping systems help distribute heating and cooling fluids, refrigerants, gases, and other utilities throughout a building or facility. Properly designed and installed piping ensures reliable system performance, maintains required flow and pressure, and supports the safe operation of connected equipment. 

In construction, mechanical piping also requires careful coordination with architectural, structural, electrical and other MEP systems to ensure proper routing, sizing, access, and installation.

Examples of Use

  • CHW/HW Piping: Used to circulate chilled water (CHW) and hot water (HW) between boilers, chillers, air-handling units, heat exchangers, and other HVAC equipment.
  • Refrigerant Piping: Connects refrigeration and HVAC equipment to transport refrigerant between components such as compressors, condensers and evaporators.
  • Gas and Utility Piping: Used to distribute natural gas, compressed air, steam, and other utilities to equipment and service points throughout a facility.
  • Industrial Piping: Transports process fluids, chemicals, water, and gases between tanks, equipment, and production systems in industrial facilities.
  • Equipment Connections: Mechanical piping connects pumps, boilers, chillers, heat exchangers, air-handling units, and other mechanical equipment to their respective systems.
