What is Board Insulation?

Board insulation is a rigid or semi-rigid insulating material used to reduce heat transfer, improve energy efficiency and maintain indoor comfort.

Definition

Board insulation consists of rigid or semi-rigid panels made from materials such as polyiso, XPS, EPS, mineral wool, or fiberglass. It is installed in roofs, walls, floors and foundations to improve thermal resistance and meet building energy requirements.

Purpose

Board insulation improves thermal performance, reduces energy consumption and supports building envelope requirements.

  • Thermal Resistance: Reduces heat transfer through building assemblies.
  • Energy Efficiency: Lowers heating and cooling demands.
  • Moisture Management: Certain types resist water absorption & help manage moisture.
  • Fire Performance: Some products contribute to fire-rated assemblies when properly installed.
  • Code Compliance: Helps meet specified R-value and energy code requirements.
  • Material Estimation: Helps contractors calculate board quantities, coverage areas and material costs.

Examples of Use

  • Commercial Roofing: Installed beneath roof coverings to improve thermal performance.
  • Exterior Walls: Reduces heat transfer through the building envelope.
  • Foundations: Limits heat loss through foundation walls & concrete slabs.
  • Floor Insulation: Improves thermal performance beneath floors.
  • Cold Storage: Maintains controlled temperatures in refrigerated facilities.
  • Residential Construction: Insulates walls, roofs, basements, and other building areas.
  • Renovation Projects: Upgrades insulation in existing buildings.

Notes

  • Board insulation comes in various materials, thicknesses, dimensions and R-values.
  • Common types include polyiso, XPS, EPS, mineral wool and fiberglass.
  • Takeoffs typically use architectural drawings, roof plans, wall sections and project specifications.
  • Contractors should verify board dimensions, thickness, R-value, and material requirements before estimating.
  • Estimates may include boards, adhesives, fasteners, joint treatments, and other accessories.
  • Installation requirements vary by application, material and building code.
  • Some insulation boards require protective coverings to meet fire safety requirements.
  • Accurate takeoffs help minimize waste, prevent material shortages and improve bid accuracy.
