Walk onto any jobsite and ask who's doing the estimate, and you'll usually hear one name. One person is buried in drawings, running quantities by hand the same way estimators have for a century.
That's the thing about the estimating engineering job. It hasn't changed much since it started. Rulers became digitizers. Digitizers became on-screen takeoff software. But the core of the work stayed the same: a person, a set of plans, and hours of manual counting.
Now the numbers say that's shifting. Even as construction demand continues to grow, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 4% decline in cost estimator employment between 2024 and 2034.
That's not because the role stopped mattering. Contractors still leave estimating and preconstruction positions vacant for 60 to 90 days or more, and firms are competing hard for the estimators still in the field.
The pipeline problem is real too
The estimators who built their careers pricing work by hand are retiring, and younger talent is gravitating toward project management or field roles that feel more visible. As the demands for speed and accuracy increase in every sector, fewer people are opting for careers in estimating.
This is one of the reasons why many companies have decided to adopt transparent AI estimating and to reconsider the future of the profession.
What's replacing it isn't a person
AI-driven takeoff doesn't replace judgment. It replaces the counting. Drawings go in, and quantities are determined, allowing estimators to concentrate on pricing strategies and risks instead of measuring the lengths of walls for the fourth consecutive hour.
The same applies to multi-building and infrastructure projects as well, as the role of the estimator shifts from counting to decision-making.
The role isn't disappearing because it wasn't valuable. It's disappearing in its old form because the industry finally has a way to keep the judgment and lose the grind.
A hundred years is a long time for any job to stay unchanged. This one's overdue.
