Construction Estimation

What Drives Steel Costs Beyond Weight

A steel structure might weigh exactly what you expected, but that doesn't mean you've priced the job right. One might use standard beams with straightforward connections while the other requires custom plates, complex welding and careful crane planning. With steel takeoffs & estimates, the weight of the steel is only part of the calculation. The work needed to fabricate, deliver and erect can change the estimate just as much.

Understanding the key structural steel takeoff variables helps estimators account for these differences before submitting a bid. Here are five factors that can make or break a steel estimate:

‍

Count tonnage using the right section weights

The first step is calculating how much steel the project requires. Accurate steel tonnage estimation starts with measuring beams, columns, channels, angles, and other structural members from the drawings.

Each member's length and weight per unit determine its total weight. Using the correct AISC shape weights helps estimators price standard sections accurately. They also need to account for plates, connection components and cutting waste where applicable. Missing members or using incorrect section sizes can throw off both material costs and the overall bid.

Price connections and detailing

A beam's weight doesn't tell you how much it will cost to connect it to the rest of the structure. Base plates, gusset plates, stiffeners, bolts and welds all add material and fabrication time. Connection hardware detailing costs can vary significantly depending on the joint design, even when two projects require similar tonnage.

Review connection details alongside the main framing plans to avoid missing these items. Our guide to steel connections estimators often miss explains what to look for.

Separate shop hours from field hours

Cutting, drilling, welding, and assembling in the shop is different labor from erecting on site. Hours depend on member complexity, connection types, site access, and sequence. Custom components add shop time, and tight access slows erection.

Price the crane and rigging

Lifting and placing heavy steel members takes more than just a crane. The cost depends on the weight of the steel, how high it needs to be lifted, site access, and how long the crane is needed. When estimating these costs, account for rigging crews, crane setup, rental charges and any permits required for the lift.

Add finishes, waste, and price changes

Protective coatings, fireproofing, cutting waste and changes in steel prices can all affect the final bid. Check the specifications for required finishes and apply a realistic waste allowance based on the material and fabrication process.

‍

Closing the Gap Between Bid and Build

Getting the tonnage right is only the starting point. Reviewing connection details, fabrication labor, erection requirements, and material costs helps you price the full scope of work.

A detailed structural steel takeoff helps you capture the quantities needed for a more reliable estimate, leaving fewer gaps between the bid and the work the project actually requires.
