What is Stencils?

Stencils are reusable templates for placing the same letters, numbers, symbols, or shapes consistently on pavement and other construction surfaces.

Definition

Stencils are pre-cut templates made from materials such as plastic, Mylar, cardstock, or metal, with openings used to apply paint, ink, or pigment in the form of letters, numbers, symbols, or shapes. Unlike decals or printed labels, the stencil itself is removed after application, leaving only the transferred marking on the surface.

Purpose

For markings that have to be repeated, the template handles much of the layout work. Crews can reproduce the same letter form, symbol, size, and spacing at several locations without setting out each character again.

Examples of Use

  • Roadway Messages: STOP, ONLY, SCHOOL, and other words painted on pavement.
  • Directional Arrows: Lane-use arrows and other symbols used to guide traffic.
  • Parking Areas: Space numbers, accessible markings, reserved areas, and directional information.
  • Construction and Utility Work: Identification numbers, warnings, or repeated symbols applied to equipment and surfaces.

Notes

  • Roadway letters, numerals, arrows, and symbols should follow the applicable pavement-marking design details.
  • Stencil bridges may leave narrow unpainted gaps in a character. FHWA allows them when readability and conspicuity are not materially affected.
  • Reusable stencils are practical for maintenance work where crews need the same marking at more than one location.
