NAC

NAC (Notification Appliance Circuit) is an electrical circuit that connects fire alarm systems to notification devices like horns, strobes, and speakers.

Definition

A Notification Appliance Circuit or NAC is an electrical circuit that connects the fire alarm control panel to fire alarm system output devices such as horns, bells, strobes, and speakers. They are primarily designed to alert occupants during fire or other emergencies.

Purpose

NAC ensures all notification devices respond during an emergency so people inside a building are warned and can evacuate safely. It ensures that both the power and the activation signal to these devices activate correctly. Depending on how it is set up, the circuit can follow a Class “A” or Class “B” arrangement, which affects how the system operates.

Examples of Use

In a Class “A” setup, the wiring runs in a continuous loop back to the control panel, allowing the system to keep working even if there is a break somewhere along the line. In a Class “B” setup, the circuit runs only in one direction, so any break will stop devices from working beyond that point, though this is often used for a lower cost. In fire alarm systems, NACs are used to connect multiple notification devices. During an emergency, the fire alarm control panel sends a signal to activate audible and visual alarms through NAC.

Notes

  • A Notification Appliance Circuit (NAC) is an electrical circuit that connects a fire alarm control panel to devices like horns, bells, strobes, and speakers.
  • It ensures these devices receive power and signals to alert occupants during emergencies for safe evacuation.
  • NAC also plays a critical role in fire safety systems by enabling the reliable activation of audible and visual alarms.
  • It can be configured as Class A (looped for continued operation if damaged) or Class B (one-way, more cost-effective but less fault-tolerant).
