What is Equipment Pads?

Equipment pads are solid, level bases used to support and protect heavy mechanical equipment from ground contact, shifting, moisture, and weather-related damage.

Definition

An equipment pad is a stable, level, and weather-resistant base that supports outdoor machinery and keeps it elevated above the surrounding ground. In construction, equipment pads can support HVAC condensers, heat pumps, generators, pool equipment, refrigeration systems and other mechanical equipment.

Purpose

Equipment pads provide a stable foundation for mechanical equipment while protecting it from moisture, dirt, pests and ground movement. They also help maintain proper equipment alignment, drainage, and airflow while reducing vibration and noise.

  • Structural Stability: Keeps heavy equipment level and prevents sinking, shifting, or tilting.
  • Moisture and Corrosion Control: Raises equipment above standing water, mud, snow, and wet ground to reduce moisture-related damage and corrosion.
  • Drainage and Clearance: Provides space below and around equipment for proper drainage, airflow, and maintenance access.
  • Vibration and Noise Reduction: Helps reduce vibration and noise from equipment such as compressors, pumps, and motors.
  • Equipment Protection: Keeps equipment away from dirt, debris, vegetation and pests that can interfere with operation or damage components.

Examples of Use

  • Air Conditioner Condensers: Installed on plastic or concrete pads to keep outdoor condenser units level and above the ground.
  • Whole-House Generators: Mounted on concrete slabs to provide a stable and durable base for heavy generator equipment.
  • Pool Pumps and Filtration Systems: Installed on elevated resin, composite, or concrete bases to keep equipment away from standing water and wet ground.
  • Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps: Supported on pads or slabs, often with vibration isolation, to provide a stable base and reduce equipment vibration.
  • Rooftop Commercial HVAC Units: Installed on structural curbs or equipment supports that distribute equipment loads and protect the roof assembly.
  • Industrial Air Compressors: Mounted on reinforced pads or vibration-isolation systems to provide stability and reduce vibration transfer.
  • Commercial Refrigeration Chillers: Installed on durable concrete equipment pads to support heavy equipment and keep it above snow, water, and debris.

Notes

  • Equipment pads can be made from concrete, plastic, composite, rubber, steel or other suitable materials, depending on the equipment and installation requirements.
  • Pad size and thickness should be selected based on equipment dimensions, weight, loading conditions, and applicable project requirements.
  • Outdoor equipment pads should provide adequate clearance for drainage, airflow, maintenance, and service access.
  • Vibration isolation may be required for equipment such as compressors, pumps, and motors.
  • Equipment pads are commonly coordinated with mechanical, structural, electrical, and architectural systems during construction.
  • Equipment pad takeoffs may include pad dimensions, thickness, material, reinforcement, anchors, curbs, and other components required for installation and estimating.
