What is Axis of Symmetry?

Axis of symmetry is a line that divides a shape or a graph into two matching halves that mirror each other.

Definition

An axis of symmetry is an imaginary line that splits a figure into halves that are identical in shape and size. If you folded the shape along this line, the two halves will match. It is vertical, horizontal, or, in some shapes, diagonal.

For a parabola, the vertex and axis of symmetry work together. The vertex is the highest or lowest point of the curve, while the axis of symmetry is the line that passes through it and divides the parabola into two matching halves.

Purpose

The axis of symmetry helps determine the middle line of a symmetrical shape or graph. For a parabola, it helps find the vertex, the point where the curve is highest or lowest.

For a quadratic equation written as (y=ax^2+bx+c), the axis of symmetry formula is: x = -b/2a

An axis of symmetry calculator can also be used to find this line quickly when the values of (a) and (b) are known.

Examples of Use

  • The engineer used the axis of symmetry to ensure both sides of the structure were evenly balanced.
  • The designer drew the axis of symmetry to form similar patterns on either side of the shape.

Notes

  • A square has 4 axes of symmetry, while a circle has an infinite number of them.
  • A parabola is drawn with one axis of symmetry that goes through its vertex.
  • For (y=x^2-6x+5), the axis of symmetry is (x=3).
  • The axis can help find the vertex of a quadratic graph by identifying its center line.
  • In geometry, it is useful for describing the symmetry of shapes, patterns, and designs.
