A small circle on a construction drawing can point to information that isn't shown in the plan view itself. Follow it to the referenced detail, and you may find the dimensions, materials, or connection requirements needed to understand and price the work correctly.
What Is a Section & Detail Callout?
A section & detail callout is a reference that directs you from one part of a drawing set to a more detailed view. Take 3/A5.2 as an example: 3 is the detail number, while A5.2 is the sheet where that detail is located. The Los Alamos National Laboratory CAD Manual provides examples of standard drawing symbols, including detail bubbles and section/detail references.
You can create the reference manually in the drawing or link it through CAD/BIM software such as Revit. Either way, its job is the same: connect a location on the plan to the drawing that explains that condition in greater depth.
What Does the Referenced Detail Show?
The key difference is scale. A floor plan might be drawn at 1:100, while the referenced detail could be shown at 1:10 or 1:5. That larger view leaves room for information that would be too small to show clearly on the plan.
This is where typical details vs. specifics matter. A typical detail may apply to several similar conditions, while a specific reference can describe one location or assembly.
A wall section cut, for instance, may reveal insulation, sheathing, framing, flashing, and finish layers that are not visible in plan view.
Why Do Connection Details Matter for Takeoff?
Connection details can carry quantities that are easy to miss. A beam on the structural plan may only show its location, while the referenced detail identifies plates, bolts, welds, angles, or other hardware.
That little callout is worth a bit of attention before we start counting, as an estimator. Skipping it can mean missing detail-specific materials from the bid and then finding out about the missing scope after the project has already moved into the field.
