An 80-foot pipe run on a plan does not necessarily mean you need 80 feet of pipe.
Consider a run that measures 80 feet in plan view. Add two 90° offsets and a 10-foot riser, and the installed route can easily reach 96 feet. That is 16 feet the centerline measurement never captured.
This is where conduit takeoff measurement can get misleading.
The drawing is flat. The system isn't.
MEP systems rarely stay perfectly horizontal. Pipes and conduit bend around structure, change elevation, and connect to equipment above or below the plane you are measuring.
The problem is easy to miss because the plan still looks complete. A riser can appear as a small symbol. An offset might only be called out in a detail. Yet both affect the actual quantity.
One common plumbing takeoff mistake is measuring the horizontal run and moving on without checking the riser diagram. The result is a quantity that looks reasonable on paper but falls short when you consider the installation route.
That shortfall matters. In a piping linear footage takeoff, every missed section affects material, labor, and ultimately the bid.
The same goes for electrical work. Better electrical estimating accuracy starts with measuring the route, not just the line visible on the floor plan. And a reliable plumbing quantity takeoff needs the same discipline.
Centerlines are a useful starting point. They shouldn't be the finish line.
Trace the route. Check the risers. Account for the offsets. Then measure what will actually be installed.
